RÉSUMÉ

Dans un processus d’art-thérapie où le client est invité à traduire par l’usage du matériel artistique ses expériences, ses émotions, ses sensations ou encore ses rêves, la question de l’interprétation des images devient particulièrement délicate. Dans certains cas, l’interprétation par le thérapeute des créations du client peut être vécue positivement, car elle peut soulager ce dernier dans la mise en mots de son expérience ou encore, ouvrir celle-ci sur des perspectives différentes. Dans le cas contraire, un usage inapproprié de l’interprétation peut déstabiliser, influencer, désorienter, à la limite faire fuir le client. L’enjeu de l’interprétation des œuvres en art-thérapie est fondamental, car il implique plusieurs éléments, autant conscients, inconscients, créatifs, qu’éthiques. Dans la perspective limitée de ce court texte, nous souhaitons mettre en lumière les éléments clés de la contribution du paradigme phénoménologique au sujet de la question de l’interprétation, paradigme pour lequel nous reconnaissons notre appartenance et dont nous soulignons la contribution autant en psychologie qu’en art-thérapie. Nous commencerons par illustrer comment le bon équilibre entre posture phénoménologique et posture créative peut venir soutenir le processus thérapeutique du client et nous terminerons par les risques associés à l’abus interprétatif de l’image.

ABSTRACT

In a process of art therapy where the client is invited to translate his experiences, emotions, sensations or dreams through the use of artistic material, the question of the interpretation of images becomes particularly delicate. In some cases, the therapist’s interpretation of the client’s creations can be experienced positively, because it can relieve the client by putting his experience into words or open it to different perspectives. Otherwise, improper use of interpretation can destabilize, influence, disorient, and ultimately scare away the client. The challenge of interpreting works in art therapy is fundamental, because it involves several conscious, unconscious, creative, and ethical elements. In the limited perspective of this short text we wish to highlight the key elements of the contribution of the phenomenological paradigm to the question of interpretation, a paradigm to which we acknowledge our belonging and whose contribution we emphasize as much in psychology as in art therapy. We will start by illustrating how the right balance between phenomenological posture and creative perspectives can support the client’s therapeutic process and end with the risks associated with the interpretative abuse of the image.
