Journal overview

Religion & Education began as the bulletin of the National Council on Religion and Public Education (1974–1983), created by the National Council of Churches in the United States. It evolved into the peer-reviewed journal of Religion & Public Education (1984–1994) and expanded its mission and reach when renamed Religion & Education in 1994.

Religion & Education is an international peer-reviewed journal of research and reviews that advance civic understanding and dialogue on issues at the intersections of religion and education in public life. We broadly define religion (e.g., traditions, spirituality, secular worldviews) and education (e.g., formal and informal education within schools, professions, and communities). Editors occasionally solicit articles, but unsolicited submissions are encouraged, especially from diverse methodological approaches and theoretical and ideological perspectives. Submissions are encouraged from early-career and established scholars. Unsolicited manuscripts and special issues go through a double-anonymized peer-review process; solicited manuscripts, such as commentaries and book reviews, are reviewed by editors.

Contributors may submit unsolicited manuscripts from research in venues such as:

• public or private education at elementary, secondary, or higher education institutions;

• non-school or community organizations and settings; and

• formal or informal civic organizations or groups with religion or spirituality as an integral part of their work.

Religion & Education does not address faith-formation within religious institutions. Instead, it focuses on the beliefs, behaviors, and acts of belonging as expressed in the public square and in various global contexts. See a list of issues to survey previous topics.

Religion & Education includes four publication categories: research articles, solicited editorials and essays, and reviews of books and educational resources; in addition, the editors accept proposals for Special Issues on timely topics.

Opinions expressed by contributors do not necessarily reflect those of the editors or publisher.

Peer Review Policy: All articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and refereeing by at least two anonymous referees.

Publication office: Taylor & Francis, Inc., 530 Walnut Street, Suite 850, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
