Aims and scope

Applied Phycology is an international peer-reviewed open access journal that publishes research on all aspects of applied phycology. Applied Phycology is published on behalf of the British Phycological Society.

Applied Phycology accepts papers covering all algal groups, including cyanobacteria, related to the following topics:

  • Seaweed resources
  • Macroalgal and microalgal aquaculture
  • Integrated aquaculture
  • Applied taxonomy
  • Applied genomics
  • Applied ecology, environmental change and conservation
  • Biofuels
  • Bioactives
  • Bioprospecting
  • Biotech


Applied Phycology
publishes primary research papers and state-of-the-art reviews. We also produce Special Issues devoted to particular topics of applied phycology, and welcome proposals for these.

The journal operates on a single anonymized peer review policy.

All articles will be made freely and permanently available online through gold open access publication.

Article Publishing Charges (APCs) apply for this journal. There are a limited number of APC waivers available for high-quality papers. If you think your research might be eligible for one of these waivers, please contact the editors prior to submission.
