The Journal of Beliefs & Values: studies in religion and education is an international peer reviewed journal. It began life in 1970 as the Religious Studies Bulletin of the Association of Teachers in Colleges and Departments of Education, becoming in 1976 the Religious Studies Bulletin of the National Association of Teachers and Lecturers in Higher Education, then in 1979 the Journal of Beliefs & Values: studies in religion and education . It is affiliated to the Association of University Lecturers in Religion and Education, as well as to the International Seminar on Religious Education and Values, but maintains editorial independence.

The principal aim of the Journal of Beliefs & Values: studies in religion and education is to publish original research and reviews relevant to fields of inquiry across the disciplines of theology and religious studies. It publishes rigorous studies from any methodological perspective. The journal has a particular focus upon religious, moral, spiritual and intercultural education, broadly conceived, in contemporary and historical perspective.

The distinctive contributions of the journal include, but are not confined to:

• the social scientific study of religion and education
• empirical perspectives on religion
• the histories of religion and education and their interface
• the theory and practice of religious and moral education, including research from differing religious perspectives
• the philosophy of religious and moral education
• theological reflections on education
• childhood and religion, and spirituality through the life course
• religious and theological education in faith-based settings
• the study of the scriptures of the world’s faiths, especially as they are taught in a variety of educational contexts
• religious educational policy
• research on faith or values-based practices
• aspects of religion, politics and society

Peer review policy
All articles undergo rigorous peer review after initial editorial screening. Peer reviewers are drawn from the editorial board of the journal and a panel of other expert reviewers. The Editor has the final word on publication of articles, taking into account the advisory comments of reviewers, and conditional upon a satisfactory response by authors to the advice and recommendations given.
