ABSTRACT

Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the characteristics of the flow behaviour in the converter while considering the existence of scrap, in which the volume of fluid (VOF) model is used to simulate flows of gaseous oxygen, liquid slag and metal. The results show that the dead zone of liquid metal( the velocity is less than 0.01 m/s) lies in the gap of scrap, which reaches the better value when the scrap ratio is 20% and the scrap shape is cube. Scrap changes the bottom blowing gas route and distribution of moderate-scale vortex inside the bath, consequently producing a different mixing effect of the molten pool. The moderate-scale vortex is strengthened with the increasing of the scarp ratio and shape surface. The research content of this paper is of great significance in guiding the addition of scrap into converter.
