1 This essay was first presented as a talk delivered at the AAIS Conference in Bologna on May 31, 2022, as part of a panel on “Comparative Italian Studies?” co-organized by Ramsey McGlazer and Saskia Ziolkowski.

2 In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association included in “Hoarding Disorder” in the Fifth Edition of its standard reference work, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. In earlier editions, hoarding was present as a symptom but not as a disorder.
