Abstract

The precipitation sequence of metastable phases such as GP(1) and GP(2) in an Al-4 wt.% Cu alloy has been studied by nuclear magnetic resonance (N.M.R.). In this paper it is shown that N.M.R. serves as a useful tool for determining the change in the copper concentration of the matrix during ageing, through which not only the precipitation kinetics of the metastable phases is clarified but also the solvus for these phases is determined.
