Assessing Long-Term Trends in Health

Pages 5-23 | Published online: 23 Jan 2015

Abstract

Physical anthropologists, economists, and historians recently collaborated to assemble a large standardized database of health measures for more than 12,000 individuals who lived at sixty-five localities in the Western Hemisphere over the past several millennia. On average, the health of natives was quite diverse and sensitive to ecological or environmental conditions, and, moreover, it declined in the millennia before the arrival of Europeans.
