ABSTRACT
This article presents findings from a community-based research project on post- school education in a poor and working class community in Sedibeng West. The researchers draw on a Freirean approach of research and dialogue to work with participants to critique dominant discourses on education and employment, share lived experiences in education, work, and the community, and construct alternative conceptualisations of post-school education. Through dialogue and critique, participants identify conceptions of education that contain creative solutions, insights and examples, which could be drawn on to develop an alternate education system more responsive to the needs of poor and working class communities.
