Abstract

Microbubble technology has attracted great attention due to its wide application in many fields of science and technology, including water treatment, biomedical engineering and nanomaterials. The means to generate microbubbles and their properties are briefly described. A review of the mechanisms of production of free radicals from microbubbles is presented, with the focus on water treatment. It is concluded that, on account of their ability to produce free radicals, microbubbles hold great potential for large scale application in treatment of water and waste effluent, and hence, should be a strong focus of research and process development.
