Glomerular Filtration Rate and Extracellular Fluid Volumes during Normoglycemia and Moderate Hyperglycemia in Diabetics

Abstract

In 11 short-term diabetics, examined during normoglycemia and moderate hyperglycemia (interval: 48 hours), the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) increased in all patients during hyperglycemia, on average 11 per cent. The GFR in 16 moderate hyperglycemic diabetics, but not in 10 normoglycemic diabetics, was found to be significantly higher than normal. The extracellular fluid volumes in the diabetics were significantly higher than normal, but unaffected by the glycemic state. The present findings suggest that the blood glucose level, at least in part, contributes to the high GFR in juvenile diabetics.
