ABSTRACT

A copper 0.65 wt-% magnesium alloy was oxidised in the air from 700 to 950°C, in a TGA/DTA apparatus and a muffle furnace. The alloy oxidises following the parabolic rate law. Oxidation of this material is diffusion-controlled. A second experimental was conducted to determine the extent of oxidation by measuring the thickness of the internal oxidation layer. The amount of magnesium added to the copper prevents its oxidation up to 800°C. At higher temperatures, more magnesium is needed to slow down the rate of oxidation of copper. Furthermore, the oxidation layer of the Mg–Cu alloy can be estimated using a kinetic model designed by us for alloy oxidation.
