Figure 1 The ‘PRIME diagram’ shows the hypothetical structure of the human motivational system. Each of the five levels of motivation (plans, responses, impulses and inhibitions, motives and evaluations) can only interact with other levels that they abut in the diagram. Levels moving out from the response level evolved later and offer greater flexibility but take longer.
