The Locked Beta-phase-shift Oscillator and its Application as a Frequency DividerFootnote

Abstract

This paper discusses the phenomenon of locking in a beta-phase-shift oscillator with a view to achieving frequency division. Theoretical analysis shows that the oscillator can be locked to a range of frequency, the maximum value of which is half that of the unlocked frequency. A theoretical description of frequency division by locking is given and it is shown that any frequency division ratio—odd or even—can be obtained with a BPSO. Experimental results are shown to conform to the theoretical predictions, and to indicate that the division ratio, though limited to a maximum value for a given circuit, is not affected by variation of amplitude of the input locking pulses over a range of 1 : 3.
