An earlier version of this interview erroneously conflated the practices of two US Air Force scientists recruited from Germany’s Luftwaffe WWII-era medical research program. Bruno Balke traveled to Peru for oxygen deprivation research, not Hubertus Strughold. In addition, Hubertus Strughold, like many high-ranking officers during the Holocaust, did not himself conduct experiments at a concentration camp. His Luftwaffe research team knowingly incorporated data from torture at Dachau, especially those regarding freezing temperatures. The online version has been corrected post publication.
