Geopolitical transition and international realignment: The case of New Zealand

Pages 43-69 | Published online: 19 Oct 2007

In the past New Zealand has been prepared to go along with the interests of its major allies. But increasingly it has become clear that the interests of a small isolated island nation and those of the large industrialised Western nations (with which New Zealand has traditionally identified) will not always coincide. New Zealand has therefore been, and will increasingly be, forced to speak out on its own behalf (Henderson, 1984, 108).
