The First Research Paper in Mathematics Education: A Beginner and His Young Mentor Talk About Their Experience

ABSTRACT

We investigate the process of becoming an expert in mathematics education through the narratives of Mario, a PhD student in mathematics education, and those of Anna, his young mentor. The narratives examine the initial interactions with mathematics education (specifically, the writing of a conference paper) and explore the motives, interests, and views that frame the process. They also reveal the tensions that drive the change from “being a mathematician” to “being a researcher in mathematics education.” On one hand, the described situation provides a typical picture of young Italian researchers in mathematics education, and we highlight the distinctive traits of such experiences. On the other hand, some elements can be generalized to higher education settings. We utilize a participationist lens of analysis and we focus on motives, interests, views, and tensions.

RÉSUMÉ

Nous analysons le processus qui consiste à devenir spécialiste en didactique des mathématiques grâce aux récits fournis par Mario, un jeune doctorant en enseignement des mathématiques, et ceux d'Anna, sa jeune conseillère et mentor. Les récits racontent les premières expériences de recherche en enseignement des mathématiques (plus spécifiquement, la rédaction d'un article pour une conférence), et explorent les raisons, les intérêts et les idées qui encadrent le processus. Ils éclairent également les tensions qui conduisent à passer de ‘mathématicien’ à ‘chercheur en enseignement des mathématiques'. D'une part, la situation décrite dresse un portrait typique des jeunes chercheurs italiens dans le domaine, et nous soulignons les aspects distinctifs de ce type d'expérience. D'autre part, on peut généraliser certains éléments pour les appliquer à d'autres contextes d'enseignement de niveau supérieur. Nous utilisons une analyse de type participationniste et nous centrons notre attention sur les raisons, les intérêts, les idées et les tensions qui entrent en jeu.
