Providing Outreach Services to Muslim College Women

&
Pages 233-244 | Published online: 14 Jun 2010

Abstract

This article outlines an outreach group provided to an underserved population by a northeastern college counseling center. A six-session group was targeted toward Muslim college women that addressed personal issues the Muslim women identified (e.g., stereotypes, body and self-image, and relationships). The women named their group and shared their perspectives in a support group format. As a result of the group, the women identified feeling that a support network was created for them that permitted an open dialogue around mental health issues. Implications for counselors to create a support group for Muslim college women on university campuses are discussed.
