ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to examine the language learning strategies (LLS) employed by English for medical purposes (EMP) learners in Indonesia. To identify the strategies used by the students, the researchers employed the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire and in-depth interviews. Results indicated that Indonesian students of EMP use the six main strategy categories at high-frequency levels. Among the six main categories, metacognitive, social, and compensation strategies were used more frequently than other types of strategies. Moreover, the findings from the interviews showed that they used various strategies beyond the SILL questionnaire statements to learn English, including using digital technologies. Thus, the findings of this study provide contribution to further the development of the existing SILL.
