This issue starts a special series of papers on emulsion polymerization technology honoring the many contributions of Professor Gary W. Poehlein.

I would like to give special thanks to Professor Joe Schork, of Georgia Institute of Technology, for helping me with editing these issues, dedicated to Gary. Gary's informal minibiography will be featured at the beginning of each issue, and he will have the “last word” in an “Epilogue” in the final issue.

In closing this brief editorial, I would like to personally congratulate Gary on behalf of all of us for his past, present, and future contributions. His papers always had something new to teach me, whether the theme was applied or fundamental. I will always remember very warmly his words of encouragement and advice to me as a young, starting, “polymer engineer,” back in 1984 at a conference in Montreal!

I hope that all our readers will enjoy the papers in the “Poehlein” issues. I am sure these issues will become “required reading” on emulsion technology in the future, as Gary's papers have already become.

Thank you, Gary, and all the best to you and your family!
