• The terminology within environmental impact assessment can be quite confusing. Internationally the process of assessment tends to be known as environmental impact assessment (EIA). In the UK it has, since its formal introduction in 1988, been officially known as environmental assessment (EA). In effect both terms mean the same process. Similarly, internationally, the document submitted to decision-makers as part of the EIA process is known as the environmental impact statement (EIS), whereas in the UK it is known simply as the environment statement (ES
