Celebrating scholarship on international feminist movements and trade unions/women in work

Janet Blackman was a feminist academic, an associate editor of the Journal of Gender Studies, founding editor of the journal Social History, a political and union activist, and co-founder of Hull Arts Centre. Janet died in 2016.

The Janet Blackman Prize celebrates scholarship on international feminist movements and trade unions/women in work. This is an annual prize awarded to the author/s of the article judged as the most outstanding publication in the Journal during the previous volume addressing one or more of these areas.

Winners are announced in January each year.

Eligibility

  • Journal articles published in the Journal volume are automatically considered for the award.

  • Only peer-reviewed journal articles are eligible for this prize.

  • Eligible journal articles must particularly address international feminist movements and trade unions/women in work.

  • To be considered for the award, authors will need to adhere to the requirements of publishing ethics and best practice.

Assessment

  • Entries will be shortlisted by the Editors, and the winning article will be judged by the Editor in Chief of the Journal.

Terms and conditions

  • Where there are multiple winning articles, the Prize will be split equally between all authors of the winning articles.

Award details

  • The prize is £250.

  • The winning article will be made Free to View for six months.

  • The JGS editorial team and the Publisher will arrange social media promotion via the Journal and relevant social media channels and on the Journal’s website on Taylor Francis Online.

  • The author(s) will have the opportunity to promote their research featured in the winning article either in a podcast or in an interview with one of the editors.

We are delighted to announce the winner of this year’s Journal of Gender Studies Janet Blackman Prize. The Janet Blackman Prize celebrates scholarship on international feminist movements and trade unions/women in work. The winner of this year’s prize is Ilaria Michelis for their article Contesting gender: young women and feminist generations in gender-based violence services.
