Violence and Order: Past and Present
The essays in this collection reflect on the theoretical and practical relationships between violence and order in pre-modern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Near East, from a comparative, interdisciplinary perspective. Written by a group of historians and literary scholars, they address the problem of defining violence and order, explore the often close connections between them across a range of time periods and regions, and discuss how work of this kind can help us understand violence and order in the modern period.
