Journal overview

The Journal of Agricultural Education & Extension: Competence for Rural Innovation and Transformation is published to inform experts who do or use research on agricultural education and extension about research conducted in this field worldwide. Information about this research is needed to further theoretical development and improve policies, strategies, methods and practices for agricultural education and extension. TheJournalaccepts authoritative and well-referenced scientific articles within the field of agricultural education and extension after a double-anonymized peer review process.

Agricultural education and extension face profound change, and therefore the field's core area of attention is moving towards communication, competence development and performance improvement for a wide variety of fields and audiences, most of which can be studied from a multi-disciplinary perspective, including:

  • Advisory Services and Intermediaries
  • Agricultural Entrepreneurship and Learning
  • Communication for Development
  • Competence Management and Development
  • Design and Implementation of Competence–based Education
  • Digital Extension and Education
  • Environmental and Natural Resource Management
  • Facilitating Multi-Stakeholder Processes
  • Human Resource Development/Agricultural Human Capital
  • Innovation of Agricultural-Technical Education
  • Innovation Systems and Learning
  • Integrated Rural Development
  • Interdisciplinary and Social Learning
  • Learning, Conflict and Decision Making
  • Performance Improvement
  • Sustainable Agricultural Production

The Journal of Agricultural Education & Extension sees as the purposes of agricultural education and extension to prepare students for leadership, management, and technical support roles, to further develop advisors and extension professionals, and to improve practices in the fields mentioned. This should be achieved whilst balancing people, profit and planet interests.

The Journal accepts three types of manuscripts: original empirical research using appropriate methods and data, reviews of literature that further agricultural education and extension theory and offer new thinking and insights, and book reviews. All submissions should be embedded in theoretical literature of agricultural education and extension; use state-of-the art methods; have both practical and policy implications that go beyond one country; and describe how the paper contributes to underlying theoretical frameworks.

All submissions must comply with the Instruction for Authors.

Important notes for submitting authors

  • We are not looking for straightforward adoption studies, or competence needs assessments, without broader theoretical or methodological contributions and references to the latest literature.
  • For submission in the JAEE, manuscripts require situating the research within current theoretical frameworks in the field of agricultural education and/or extension. Their topicality and contribution to advance the state-of-the art should be evident. We strongly encourage authors to review earlier work from the Journal to be able to position their work in lines of work and theoretical debates in JAEE.
  • JAEE articles should report empirical research which contributes to the development of the theory of agricultural education and extension. They should help in developing theory, and on a practical level help increase the effectiveness of agricultural education and extension programmes by using and advancing theories of agricultural education and extension, which can also be used in other situations than the situation which has been studied. As such, manuscripts that are too focused on one country without relevance to the wider agricultural extension and education community cannot be accepted.

Peer Review

The Journal of Agricultural Education & Extension ensures that all articles published in the journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial screening by the editorial committee and, if found suitable for further consideration, double-blind refereeing by at least two referees who are active in the academic community. Given the high level of submissions, many are rejected during the initial screening stage. Book reviews and editorials do not go through peer review but are reviewed instead by the journal's editorial team. The purpose of the refereeing process is to ensure that articles provide relevant and accurate material for those who do and use research, including: researchers, academics, agricultural education and extension managers, trainers and experts, communication professionals, human resources specialists, and policy makers.

"In an era of global connections and rapid change, JAEE brings fresh, broad insights from the interface of development, research and practice. The Journal is a leading source that keeps us abreast of the debates and global challenges of promoting agricultural education and extension interventions that balance the concerns of people, policy and best practice."
Glen Shinn, Professor, Texas A&M University, USA
