The Damping of Dipole Resonances of a Plasma ColumnFootnote

Pages 513-520 | Received 15 Apr 1964, Published online: 01 May 2007

Abstract

Experiments are reported in which the subsidiary resonances of a plasma column arising from electron standing waves in the column are examined in comparison with the principal resonance (when the column behaves essentially as a dielectric medium). It is shown that radiation damping is effective in the scattering of microwaves from the column for the subsidiary resonances but that the motional damping of the waves is not simply related to the electron collision frequency.
