Notes

1 There is a third body of work represented in the studies by Sorisio, Smith, and Washington that dwells on Incidents’ communality over and against the male slave narrative’s individualism; however, it differs from mine in focusing on Jacobs’ conception of a communal self principally in relation to the black community.
