Charcoals from three Neolithic settlements in the loess area of south-central Poland

Summary

Charcoals from three Neolithic sites were examined and the results were compared with charcoal spectra from natural sediments of the same age as well as with the results of pollen analysis. It has been shown that charcoal preserved in oxbow lake sediments reflects forest clearances by Neolithic farmers. Common trees, having wood of good quality and growing in terrains easily accessible to people, were mostly used by inhabitants of the examined settlements.
