Nigeria's Niger Delta Crises and Resolution of Oil and Gas Related Disputes: Need for a Paradigm Shift

Abstract

Against the background of the paradox presented by the vast wealth from oil and gas resources in Nigeria's Niger Delta region and the unbelievable poverty levels of the region's indigenous peoples, which have given rise to disputes and attendant violent conflicts that have defied lasting resolutions, this article examines the gross inadequacies in the common modes of resolving energy-related disputes and proposes a combination of proactive and reactive measures in resolving the disputes.
