Foreword

The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers has organised the HKIE Outstanding Paper Award for Young Engineers/Researchers on an annual basis since 2006. The principal aim is to encourage young engineers and researchers aged 35 or below to publish their work and advance in their professional fields. The competition also serves as a platform for young engineers and researchers worldwide to share their accomplishments, and to promote engineering among the young generation.

We are delighted to have received an encouraging number of high-quality submissions this year, and three outstanding papers have been selected among the six shortlisted papers for receiving the Award this year. We are impressed by the quality of all the papers and we have decided to publish all the awarded and shortlisted papers in the December 2018 issue. By publishing these selected papers, we hope to showcase the remarkable achievement of the participating authors to our fellow members and readers.

On behalf of the Institution, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Panel of Judges for their efforts, and to all the entrants for their participation.

We also look forward to receiving more outstanding submissions to the HKIE Transactions from around the globe and enthusiastic participation in the HKIE Outstanding Paper Award next year. More details on next year's competition can be viewed at https://hkie.org.hk/en/news/event_info/198/.
