Designing Mega-projects in Hong Kong: Reflections from an Academic Accomplice

Practice Note

Pages 105-124 | Published online: 23 Jan 2007

Abstract

This Practice Note reflects on the experience of designing a new cultural quarter in Hong Kong. The note begins by discussing the background to the project and the context within which the proposals were made. A second part presents the key design principles that informed the proposals. A final part reviews the experience and draws out six sets of reflections concerning the inputs and processes that led to the design solution. Although it only reports on one project, and from the perspective of one member of the design team (the author of this article), this Practice Note nevertheless raises issues that have broader application to large-scale international masterplanning commissions elsewhere.
