DEBT PROBLEMS: The Real Feel of Mortgage Payments

Pages 97-104 | Published online: 23 Jan 2015

Abstract

The author points out that home buyers today no longer have the advantage of inflation as they pay back their mortgages over time. Thus their incomes will not rise as rapidly as their debt service. Moreover, the ratios of income to debt we rely on were developed in a time of higher inflation. He produces a "real feel" indicator that gives a more realistic idea about the future burden of mortgage payments.
