Pages 227-253 | Published online: 14 Oct 2008

Abstract

This chapter explores the role of forgiveness in treating comorbid psychological trauma and substance abuse disorders. Firstly, we will discuss the rationale for introducing forgiveness into treatment. Secondly, we will explore the neurological and psychological processes involved in the cross-contamination of trauma, substance abuse, and chronic unforgivness. Thirdly, we will describe the condition of unforgiveness, and the character strengths needed to resolve it. Fourthly, we will discuss the nature of forgiveness, the benefits of forgiveness, and the misconceptions about forgiveness. Finally, we will present eight phases of treatment for helping the traumatized substance abuser learn how to forgive self, to ask and receive forgiveness, and to forgive others.
