ABSTRACT
Comparisons of DNA profiles recovered from the crime-scene and a person through short tandem repeat (STR) analysis using capillary electrophoresis (CE) is the gold standard method of determining a match. A comparison of STR profiles generated using CE to massively parallel sequencing (MPS) methods was undertaken. The results showed CE methods recovered high percentages of autosomal or Y-STR markers individually, however, MPS produced more information at low inputs and a higher number of STR markers overall, showing the potential of MPS to provide additional data to assist in solving major crimes.
