ABSTRACT

This contribution is part of a broader research programme – inspired by the ‘modelling’ paradigmatic approach to Social Representations Theory – articulated in ‘field’ and ‘media’ studies. The latter are aimed at detecting social representations of (im)migrants in relation to social inclusion/exclusion, identity affiliations and ideological positions in the ‘multivoiced’ and ‘multiagent’ 10.074 sources from: (a) scientific discourse, (b )political-institutional discourse, (c) media discourse in newspapers and broadcast, (d) social discourse ‘by’ and ‘for’ lay people via four social media. This contribution analyzes 908 articles about ‘(im)migration’ published in 2017–2019 in four Italian online newspapers of different political orientations. The results here presented illustrate the five Clusters emerged by Descending Hierarchical Classification by IRaMuTeQ. Crossresults concerning the transversal analysis of other sources from different media are also briefly presented in the conclusions, highlighting the consistency of the polarized discourse on (im)migration, depending on the ideological political positioning of the multi-voiced and multi-agent social actors.

Notes

1 From 2018 onwards, Salvini joined the old Lega Nord with a new party, the Lega per Salvini Premier (LPS), founded on 14 December 2017, definitively renouncing the theme of independence in the Po Valley and significantly the word ‘North’ in the Party logo. The federal congress of the Northern League held on 21 December 2019 effectively sanctioned the handover between the two parties: the LSP concluded its membership campaign in August 2020, accepting new militants also from the northern regions, while the old militants of the Northern League would have obtained membership in both parties. https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indipendentismo_padano

https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lega_per_Salvini_Premier; https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matteo_Salvini

However, on the site https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governo_Conte_I it is mentioned as a Party as a coalition party with the 5 Stars explicitly Lega per Salvini Premier LPS and not Lega Nord.

On the official website of the Government. The roles of vice-premieres and various ministers are mentioned, but not parties.

In order to avoid extreme redundancies, since its first full name as above, ‘Lega per Salvini Premier', we will refer to it using the name Lega followed by the acronym Lega (LPS) of the current party.
