¹ Texas SB 8 references Texas Senate Bill 8, which passed in the Texas legislature in September 2021. This bill, often called “The Heartbeat Bill” banned abortions after the detection of a fetal cardiac ability which occurs around 6 weeks of pregnancy. It was the first 6-week abortion ban since Roe vs Wade and uniquely relied on individual citizens to enforce it by authorizes people to sue any abortion provider or anyone who aids and abets someone seeking an abortion.
