Analysis of Simultaneous Broken and Fallen to Earth Conductor Fault Condition in Power Systems

Abstract

In power systems, analysis of critical faults, mainly, different types of simultaneous faults on transmission lines, is a sensitive issue. To identify the accurate fault place during a simultaneous fault condition, all major algorithms fail to provide the desired results. In this paper, an analysis of simultaneous faults called broken and fallen to earth conductor fault conditions is carried out. With the help of an equivalent sequence components network, generalized impedance equations are derived to determine the accurate fault place on the transmission line during the simultaneous broken and fallen to earth conductor’s fault condition. For authentication of the derived method, simulation has been done using MATLAB tool with two different medium transmission lines. Simulation outputs manifest the accuracy of the proposed generalized impedance equations by showing 98% accuracy for identifying precise fault places. The derived fault analysis method uses the sequential network formation technique, which can be easily understood by researchers.

Dhaval N Tailor completed his BE in electrical engineering from G H Patel College of Engineering and Technology, Vallabh Vidhyanagar, Gujarat in 2010 and ME degree in electrical power system from BVM Engineering College, Vallabh Vidyanagar, India in 2013. Currently, he is pursuing PhD from Gujarat Technology University, Ahmedabad. He is a Life Member of IE (India) and the Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE). His research field is performance investigation and protection of transmission lines using digital distance relay. He is the co-investigator of a research grant project from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), India. His areas of interest are power system protection, power system modeling and fault analysis, and embedded systems and industrial automation.

Vijay H Makwana received his BE (Electrical) and ME (Electrical Power Systems) from BVM Engineering College, Sardar Patel University,Vallabh Vidhyanagar, India in 1999 and 2002, respectively. He obtained PhD (Electrical) from Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar, India in 2013. He has more than 18 years of teaching experience. Currently, he is working as a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the GH Patel College of Engineering and Technology, Vallabh Vidyanagar, India. He has published 12 papers in various international peer-reviewed journals. He has written a book on Power System Protection and Switchgear published by Tata Mc-Graw Hill, 2010, India. He has also written a monograph on Transmission Line Protection using Digital Technology published by Springer in 2016.
