Message from CAA Executive Director

The Art Bulletin publishes leading scholarship in the English language in all aspects of art history as practiced in the academy, museums, and other institutions. From its founding in 1913, the journal has published, through rigorous peer review, scholarly articles and critical reviews of the highest quality in all areas and periods of the history of art. Articles take a variety of methodological approaches, from the historical to the theoretical. In its mission as a journal of record, The Art Bulletin fosters an intensive engagement with intellectual developments and debates in contemporary art historical practice. The journal welcomes submissions from scholars worldwide and at every career stage.

Publication of The Art Bulletin is made possible by membership support and by contributions from individuals and institutions. Contributions to The Art Bulletin are tax-deductible. For more information, please call 212-392-4411 or email [email protected].

Dear Readers,

This issue’s absorbing collection of articles covers geographical and intellectual territory ranging from how imagery of the aftermath of the US Civil War drove conceptions of the body and ableism in the late nineteenth century to Korea, where an early twentieth-century art collection shaped the idea of national identity to Italy, where “cosmetic provocateur” Donatello became a master of manipulating surfaces.

This issue is introduced by the journal’s outgoing Reviews Editor, Stephanie Porras, whose editorial goes a long way in demystifying the process of how—and why—The Art Bulletin publishes reviews of books and exhibitions. She writes insightfully that “reviews in The Art Bulletin allow art historians to speak to one another, not only about the books of the past and present moment, but also to future students and practitioners” and that a review “gestures outward and beyond its subfield, indicating the ways in which each title reviewed may be useful for the broad readership of [the journal].”

In this spirit of open discussion, we hope readers who are traveling to Chicago for this year’s Annual Conference will consider attending the special panel discussion hosted by CAA’s Publication Committee. “Peer Review Futures” will bring together editors from across CAA’s journals to speak about the challenges and expectations posed by peer review in an atmosphere of increasing precarity and professional expectations. While publications like The Art Bulletin could not exist without the good will and transparency inherent in the process, peer review is in crisis. We hope that a lively, productive conversation around the issues of peer review and how it might evolve will emerge.

We are looking forward to seeing many of you in Chicago in February!

Sincerely,

—Meme Omogbai
