Welcome to a special edition of the Australian Journal of Forensic Sciences. Those that attended the 23rd meeting of the International Association of Forensic Sciences, in conjunction with the 26th symposium of the Australian New Zealand Forensic Society, will have been part of a once in a career opportunity. The science presented was a showcase for the high-quality research and casework being conducted not only here in Australasia but also worldwide. Necessarily, when submitting abstracts for the conference, there were space limitations. This put constraints on what could be added, and what was omitted. In agreement with Taylor & Francis, there was the opportunity to author extended their abstracts, thus allowing a chance to present more of their great work. The outcome is the extended abstracts that constitute the supplementary series. The content of extended abstracts is broad in nature, reflecting the nature of the multi-disciplinary conference. The extended abstract are succinctly written and offer an insight into the diverse nature of the meeting.

Thank you to Dan, Ambika and the team at Taylor & Francis for allowing this to happen.
