It should be helpful for submitting authors to be aware of some of the key statistics of the product they are dealing with.

The World Steel Association produces annual data on a variety of factors – for example Sustainability and Safety.

However, the purpose of this Editorial is to introduce each of you to the facility that World Steel.

Association governs. I would like to thank the World Steel Association for their permission to use their data.

The first table demonstrates a year to year production of steel in the World. China produces 50% of the World's steel production. It is of interest to look at the situation in Turkey with significant levels of production and 71.6% via the electric arc route which is shown in the second Table.

The current moves to reduce carbon footprints in the steel industry in largely being tackled by the move from blast furnace / basic oxygen to electric arc. Currently in the UK there are two plants proposing to make this change.

A look at the third table shows that the UK has a net export of scrap of around 8 million tonnes. This means the feedstock for current production is within the UK and does not rely on transporting iron ore and coal around the World.

That is a very basic consideration and shows how valuable the data produced by World Steel Association can be. However, on the scrap discussion it has to be established on the suitability of the scrap quality to meet the production demands, particularly in the automotive and white goods sectors.

This is the last edition of Ironmaking and Steelmaking published by Taylor and Francis. The publication of the journal will be taken over by Sage Publications Ltd. To date a significant amount of migration has taken place.

During this transfer stage there will be some issues arising. It is essential that authors and reviewers refer them to myself or Sage Publications and they will be resolved from there. A body of papers has already been pulled together for future publication by Sage Publications.

The Steel World issues will continue in the meantime.
