Notes

1 Defining the mass displacement of Venezuelans is difficult. This essay refers to both migrants and refugees interchangeably, but acknowledges that the term 'migrant' is more of a catch-all category that includes 'economic migrants' - mainly referring to people who left in the early 2000s (primarily to North America and Spain). As time went on, the migratory flow shifted; the term 'refugee' became increasingly appropriate, referring to people who have fled on foot or by public transport, with no assets.
