The editorial team at Continuum, Panizza Allmark, Tim Laurie, John Tebbutt and Jess Taylor would like to congratulate the Cultural Studies Association of Australasia (CSAA) on its 30th Anniversary in 2022. In this anniversary special section, we begin with a thought-provoking article from Rob Cover: ‘Global anniversaries and cultural rupture: September 11, COVID-19 and ethical cultural change’. Then we have a series of reflections on Cultural Studies and the CSAA history from a range of CSAA members, in the collection ‘Celebrating 30 Years of the CSAA’, edited by Jay Daniel Thompson and Elizabeth Stephens.
There has been a long CSAA affiliation with Continuum, most notably with the annual publication of the special CSAA Conference Issue, which began in the late 1990s. Continuum has always supported new (and established) voices, new visions as well as capturing the zeitgeist of Cultural Studies concerns. The annual Continuum Postgraduate prize for best abstract/paper from the CSAA conference is just one example of our support of the Association. It has been both a thrill and a challenge in selecting just one winner each year, as the quality, originality and Cultural Studies engagement of our emerging scholars has been consistently outstanding. The critical engagement certainly has provided an optimistic outlook to the future of Cultural Studies. The publication of the CSAA Conference Issue has always been an incredibly rewarding experience, showcasing the breadth and depth of scholarly work as presented at the conference. We thank the past CSAA conference organizers who have taken on the significant role as guest editors. In the associated online article collection, we have selected articles from past CSAA special issues that we consider important to revisit. The articles present the critical rigour and scope of Cultural Studies themes over the last three decades.
