Abstract

A piezoelectric driven micro blower constructed with dual chamber associated with Inlet, Relay, and Outlet three orifices inside is developed. The airflow direction is perpendicular to the vibration direction of the actuator so can fabricate a thinner chamber fit for employment on a limit space of a thin device. Optimal design of piezoelectric actuator, orifice ratio and thickness, as well as the phase difference of driving signal between the actuator in each chamber to gain higher flowrate are investigated. Finite-element simulation and experiment are carried out in single chamber and then dual chamber. Both results are in a good agreement, and verify flowrate is significantly increased while using dual chamber in appropriate design and operation. An example of heat dissipation with heatsink and IC heat source employed neighboring to the exit of Outlet orifice is studied. Both the results of analytical simulation and experiment show the heatsink is cooled down to a temperature in a timespan and nearly no further temperature change. It denotes the capacity of the prototype design of dual chamber can reduce an upper limit of temperature. The temperature reduction rate is also found as a useful index for startup time assignment of the dual-chamber micro blower.
