Being remembered as a psychologist? A data driven approach to the Moritz Lazarus Archive

ABSTRACT

Moritz Lazarus, the first professor for psychology, is known for his Völkerpsychologie (psychology of peoples). However, his archive at the National Library of Israel contains surprisingly many texts on individual psychology, a part of his oeuvre which is still mostly unknown. In this study, digital analysis methods (image embedding and topic modeling) are used to gain a first insight into his archive and his psychology. The findings show Lazarus in a different light: A psychologist aware of the research of his time who is nevertheless rooted in social and cultural psychology.

8. In the tradition of Hegel, Geist is often translated as spirit, but it can also mean mind, the totality of personality, thought processes, individual history and, indeed, culture itself. For Lazarus, especially in his Völkerpsychologie, we have to think of these more general concepts – think of Geist in Zeitgeist, for example.

One can think of a silhouette portrait that works similarly: One tries to encapsulate a persons three dimensional shape in two dimensions, thereby preserving information deemed most important at the cost of other information: We cannot see, what the person looks like from a front angle, but the side angle allows to recognize and encapsulate a person in a much simpler form. The algorithm in this case works similarly with vectors of much higher dimensionality; the job therefore becomes much more difficult.
