Obituaries of Ernst A. Simon – chances of biographical research in the context of archival digitization

ABSTRACT

Based on the recently digitized estate of Ernst Akiba Simon (1899–1988) at the National Library of Israel, this essay analyzes selected obituaries in the context of biographical research. It reflects on opportunities, possibilities, and necessary conditions for perceiving digital data as more than representations of an analog system. Particular attention is paid to the following aspects. 1. How is Ernst Simon remembered today? 2. What are possible benefits of digital humanities’ methods. 3. How can institutions like the NLI and the research community lay the foundations for making digitized archives usable at the level of machine-readable data?

3. HTR (Handwritten Text Recognition) or OCR (Optical Character Recognition) are some of the methods used to convert printed or handwritten text into machine-readable text. This not only allows for full-text searches at the word level but also allows large volumes of text to be examined and analyzed in a relatively short time using other digital humanities tools.

4. The FAIR principles serve as a guideline for scientific data management, emphasizing machine actionability. FAIR consists of the four major aspect: Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reuse of digital assets.
