Charles T. Tackney

Charles T. Tackney first came to the Management Spirituality and Religion (MSR) Interest Group of the Academy of Management about a decade ago, interested in developing a theology of the workplace. This notion first arose during Fulbright supported doctoral field work in in Japan on the topic of industrial relations in the early 1990s; I studied Japan’s “lifetime employment” system and how Japan’s employment norms arose at such variance from the U.S., despite common labor legislation There were theological dimensions to this inquiry beyond the scope of the “web of rules” governing industrial relations systems. This research path resulted in publications in the Journal of Management, Spirituality, and Religion. Through this, I came to serve as an MSR reviewer and JMSR Associate Editor. I currently serve as the Chair of the MSR Interest Group (2019-2020). Since 1999, as a citizen of the Republic of Ireland (with dual U.S. citizenship) I have been an Associate Professor at Copenhagen Business School, in the Department of Management, Society, and Communication. Through this period, I have been the Study Board Chair and Program Director of the Asian Studies Program (2000-2006), and currently coordinate Year 1 and Year 3 Bachelor Projects, along with being the Master’s thesis Coordinator in the Business, Language, and Culture Program. I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in project management, industrial relations, and research methods.
