Highlights for the Journal of Dual Diagnosis in 2023

, MD, PhD, MBA

The year 2023 brought in a number of accomplishments for the Journal of Dual Diagnosis. The journal welcomed a new associate editor, Erin Woodhead, PhD, associate professor of psychology at San José State University. Dr. Woodhead’s research interest is substance use and treatment utilization with a particular focus on older people. The Journal has 39,000 annual downloads and views, an impact factor of 2.2, and a 32% acceptance rate.

Issue 4 of 2023 contained the first of a two-part special issue focusing on trauma and substance use. An editorial accompanied the special issue highlighted the articles (Roche & Foster, Citation2023). Many of the papers in this issue focused on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Ferrie et al., Citation2023; Jegede et al., Citation2023; Vujanovic et al., Citation2023). Some focused on specific populations including people near the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York (North & Pfefferbaum, Citation2023) as well as PTSD symptoms and alcohol use in nurses during the COVID pandemic and in firefighters (Beck et al., Citation2023; Leonard et al., Citation2023). The second part of this special issue is included in the current issue of the Journal.

Beyond the special issue, published papers included a variety of topics. As in the special issue, two of the papers focused on PTSD (McGrew et al., Citation2023; Wolitzky-Taylor et al., Citation2023). Other papers in 2023 presented findings on less researched topics in dual diagnosis including weight gain (Krotter et al., Citation2023) and obsessive compulsive disorder and sleep (Bakhshaie et al., Citation2023; Juda et al., Citation2023). Two reviews focused on cannabis use. One of these papers reviewed the literature on psychosocial interventions to reduce cannabis use, while the other provided recommendations for reducing the risk of psychosis from cannabis use (Fischer et al., Citation2023; Petros et al., Citation2023).

Qualitative analysis studies were also well represented among papers in the Journal in 2023. These papers were topically diverse and included subjective housing stability in dual diagnosis patients (Yuan et al., Citation2023), the treatment needs of women with eating disorders and substance use disorders (Humphreys et al., Citation2023), experiences using peer or family support for smoking cessation and implementing client-centered care (Davis et al., Citation2023; Nagawa et al., Citation2023).

Finally, in 2023 we clarified the scope of the Journal (Brown, Citation2023). The Journal accepts submissions on a variety of topics related to substance use comorbidity. These comorbidities or co-occurring conditions can include having a second psychiatric illness but also include consequences of substance use such as medical comorbidity, homelessness, and criminal justice system interaction. We welcome submissions on these topics and others related to substance use disorder comorbidity.
