Cross-Cultural Religious Literacy Education for Religious Freedom Progress in Vietnam

Abstract

This essay discusses the author’s reflections on a recent convening at the Fetzer Institute on cross-cultural religious literacy (CCRL), and suggests that CCRL education in Vietnam should be pursued via a two-tiered model. Tier one is short-term training on CCRL capacity building for all parties involved in policy-making and implementation to address immediate needs. Tier two is long-term education on CCRL for the whole society through elementary schools and through an ongoing dialogue and process of reviewing and improving all religious policies.

Hien Vu

Hien Vu is the Vietnam Program Manager at the Institute for Global Engagement. She has more than 20 years of experience working in multinational and multicultural settings on religious freedom, human rights, peacebuilding, holistic community development, and global education. Prior to joining IGE, she worked in the Voluntary Repatriation Program at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Hong Kong. She holds a master’s degree in Peacemaking and Conflict Studies from Fresno Pacific University.
