Missionary Congregation of the Evangelizing Sisters of Mary

Abstract

The majority of the Catholic schools under the leadership of their respective Congregations are aimed at transforming the surrounding society by conveying holistic education. The Evangelising Sisters of Mary is one of the Catholic Institutes running different schools among the less advantaged people in the society. This paper explains how the Missionary Congregation of the Evangelising Sisters of Mary carries out its education mission in regard to its charism in the church and society. It gives a brief historical background of their foundation and their founders as it expounds on how they manage the whole idea of running schools, financing the schools, maintain discipline, raising academic performance and handling challenges facing the management of the secondary schools under its care.

3 The coeducation schools are strictly Catholic faith based but enrolment of students is from any faith-based denomination.

4 Setting strict weekend timetable to be adhered so as to cover classes, games, preps, prayers, entertainment and general cleanliness. Full time guidance and counselling programme for students to approach the counsellor freely. Motivating students and teachers from time to time as well as awarding best performing teachers and students. Holding class meetings of which at times we divide students per gender with their correspondent teacher. Having prayer day once or twice in a term.

5 These are days set apart that parents, teachers and learners get together and share what need to be done in order to improve the performance; for example, the Mathematics grade of a learner who is struggling.

6 Sponsors for those students who are completely unable to raise anything for their studies or those who are total orphans.

7 The team comprises the Superior General and her four members of the general council of the Congregation of the Evangelising Sisters of Mary.

Sister Mary Nariangai Jumanne is a member of the Missionary Congregation of the Evangelising Sisters of Mary. She is a novice teacher who is completing her Bachelor of education in Kiswahili/History at Tangaza University College. She is motivated by her aspiration to improve the lives of the marginalised learners through holistic education.
