The Editors, past and present, of Territory, Politics, Governance (TPG) would like to formally acknowledge the tragic passing of Dr Klaus Detterbeck in September 2023. Klaus was a distinguished academic attached to the Institute of Political Sciences at the Georg August University of Göttingen in Germany. His research interests included the role and scope of political parties, the significance of regions for the European Union and the mechanics and outcomes of federalism and regionalism. One of his notable publications was the monograph Multi-level party politics in Western Europe (Detterbeck, Citation2012) based on his Habitation thesis at the Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg in 2009.

Klaus was invited to join as Editor in 2019 and he was a greatly valued member of the editorial team. He brought to the journal a deep expertise in territorial politics and in 2018 he co-edited with Eve Hepburn a Handbook on Territorial Politics, which the then Editor in Chief John Agnew contributed to (Detterbeck & Hepburn, Citation2018). He also co-edited a volume on political parties and civil society in federal countries (Detterbeck et al., Citation2015) and one on the transformation of the British party system (Detterbeck & Stolz, Citation2018).

As a diligent editor, Klaus was overseeing papers in that field, and he was responsible for shepherding several special issues including a forthcoming special issue on regional paradiplomacy.

In 2020, Klaus was a pivotal contributor to our shared editorials on ‘The COVID-19 pandemic: territorial, political and governance dimensions of the crisis’ (Dodds et al., Citation2020) and on the first decade of the journal (Dodds et al., Citation2022). Our latest TPG editorial which addresses the ongoing implications from the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation (Dodds et al., Citation2023) proved to be his final contribution to TPG.

On behalf of the entire TPG editorial team, past and present, authors and reviewers, we offer our deepest condolences to Klaus’s family, friends and colleagues.
