ABSTRACT
During 1992, 1993, and 1994, trials were conducted at Lubbock, TX to compare planting rates of burrs and caryopses on establishment and turf quality of buffalograss. Planting caryopses at rates of 1125 to 1875 m”2 resulted in optimum stand establishment 2 and 4 wks after planting. Caryopses had faster emergence, less seedling mortality, and better establishment than burrs. Planting rates were less important in successful stand establishment than the type of seed. Utilization of caryopses should enhance buffalograss establishment for both commercial and residential turfgrass growers in arid and semiarid environments.
